The Galata Tower was built by the Genoese in 1349. According to the Rough Guide, "it had a number of functions over the centuries, including a jail, a fire tower and even a springboard for early adventurers attempting to fly." Its viewing gallery is 61 meters high and gives you what must be the best views of the city outside of a helicopter.
